Our Story
With roots as old as Calgary, The Pioneer has had as its proprietors some iconic Canadians. Our space is comprised of what used to be two separate buildings; The red brick exterior was the original home of the Calgary Cattle Company, the sandstone exterior being the Calgary Milling Company. Both buildings were erected in 1901 with construction being complete in 1903. Our name ‘The Pioneer’ hallmarks to 1908 when the building became known as The Pioneer Meat Market, home to famous Canadian, Pat Burns’ company. The buildings we currently operate are steeped in history, and have changed hands countless times and been home to many incredible businesses over its 115 years and counting.
At The Pioneer today, we are proud to continue to preserve this historical infrastructure of these iconic buildings and are thrilled to offer this space to Calgarians, fostering community and togetherness in an iconic part of Calgary’s downtown. Welcoming creatives, collaborators and dreamers alike, at the Pioneer aspire to be a catalyst for connection.
